Description
JAPAN, Edo period, 19th century
Carved boxwood okimono, signed Masanao (Ise)
Taking the form of a group of two monkeys eating persimmons, a small one climbing on their backs, the eyes inlaid with brown horn, the teeth in bone, the details finely worked on the whole subject, giving the whole a highly naturalistic aspect. Bearing a Masanao signature "正直" engraved on the underside.
4.3 x 4 x 5 cm
Provenance: French family collection. Supposedly brought back from Asia in the mid-twentieth century by a relative of the family known as Marcel. The presence of a book dedicated by Michel Beurdeley to Marcel (1962) testifies to his interest in Far Eastern art. The collection has been passed down to the current owners.
