Description
JAPAN, 19th century Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) Very rare set of twenty prints from the "Sketches of Yoshitoshi" (Yoshitoshi ryakuga), two prints in chuban format per sheet laid horizontally. Circa 1882, possible later reprints. Nishiki-e, ink and colours on paper, oban format vertical, bearing the collector's provenance stamps on the upper margins. (Very good condition) Provenance: Former Edmond Labour collection, acquired during his trip to Japan in 1901. Produced around 1882, the Yoshitoshi ryakuga ("Sketches of Yoshitoshi") series was one of the last years of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's career. Produced shortly before his most famous cycles, such as One Hundred Aspects of the Moon and New Forms of Thirty-Six Ghosts, it testifies to a phase of freer and more inventive experimentation by the artist. Drawing on Japanese folklore, history and Kabuki theatre, Yoshitoshi's compositions are light-hearted and often humorous. Many of these images are in the register of mitate, a play on allusions and ironic transpositions that wittily hijacks classical subjects. The prints were published in pairs, with two images printed on the same sheet in a vertical chūban format. The series enjoyed a certain success, as evidenced by several reprints, although their chronology is still uncertain. Some of the variants can be distinguished by the absence of the series title in the cartouche that usually appears at the top.
