VIETNAM, late 19th century
Rare "guơm" type officer's sabre
Officer's sabre consisting of a narrow curved steel blade, chased at the heel with ornate decoration of stylised scrolls and cloudy volutes, running parallel to the back of the blade are fine longitudinal lines forming regular striations, corresponding to shallow gutters or grooves. The copper frame features a copper handle decorated with copper and silver inlays, the pommel ends in a finely chased lion's head in the round, while the stirrup guard features a dragon moving through clouds. The scabbard, sheathed in copper, has three silver fittings in chased silver with dragons in repoussé, the end (bouterolle) curved upwards.
