One of the most singular artists, designers and decorators of French Art Deco, Marcel Charles Coard (1889 - 1975) forged his creative identity through encounters and exceptional commissions. His work led him to collaborate with some of the most daring personalities of his time - Jacques Doucet, Paul Cocteau, Suzanne Belperron, the Jansen house, the Mobilier National - on large-scale projects such as the Saint James studio and Paul Cocteau's home in Champgault.
It is in his studio on rue Saint-James, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, that he gives shape to this singular universe, surrounding himself with a small circle of decorators, painters and cabinet-makers. It was in this environment of constant emulation that Coard found his way with a rare freedom and rigour. Doucet invited him to confront his art with the most radical expressions of the time - cubism, the primitive arts of Africa and Oceania - encouraging him to create an unprecedented synthesis in furniture of profound originality, where traditional know-how, pure forms and noble materials come together.
Our Macassar ebony veneered side table with parchment top was made around 1925, early in the designer's career. This piece of furniture uses clean, simple, yet feminine shapes, with a long, tapering base. The introduction of Greek spiral motifs at each corner of the table is also characteristic of the cabinetmaker's stylistic vocabulary. Despite the simpler forms, cleaner lines and more streamlined design, Marcel Coard did not detract from the furniture's craftsmanship or the precious materials used.
