Description
GEORGES BAREAU (1866–1931)
‘L’Histoire’ (History), a model created around [1896], a silver proof exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, Paris, 1898
A major allegorical sculpture.
Bronze cast with a medal-like patina; the laurels on the headdress highlighted with gilding.
Early edition cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne (no. 286 in the sales catalogue) from the late 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century.
Signed ‘Georges BAREAU’ on one side of the terrace’s ledge, and marked ‘F. BARBEDIENNE Fondeur’ on the other side of the terrace’s ledge.
60 x 56 x 23 cm
A title plaque is probably missing from the front of the terrace; there are scattered areas of damage and oxidation on the patina.
