Description
Max PAPART (1911-1994)
"Dorothée Bleu
Portrait of Dorothée Blanck, the artist's mistress and model
Gouache and pencil on paper
Dorothée Blanck (1934-2016) was Max Papart's model. She was a dancer at the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Mogador, then an actress, notably for Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy and Peter Ustinov. She is best known for Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962), Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964) and Les demoiselles de Rochefort (1967).
"Rue Campagne Première takes me back to my own memories as a model, where I used to pose for Jean-Claude Bédard (1928-1982) and Max Papart. I was always late, unable to get up in the morning, arriving at best at 10am. Papart would say to me: "What's more, I'm sure you haven't had breakfast - I've saved you a croissant and some coffee! At the stroke of midday, Bédard would bring out his hunting horn and the whole court would know that we were going to lunch at the artists' canteen, just around the corner from Boulevard Montparnasse and the church (now a bank). In terms of relationships, I preferred this job to any other. We may have only been jugs, but painters didn't break their jugs if they had to use them. - Dorothée Blanck.
