Born in 1920, Bela Sara was a Central African modernist painter active in the Congo (DRC) in the mid-twentieth century.
An important member of the "Le Hangar" workshop in Lubumbashi, he painted directly with his fingertips, which gave his works a spontaneous freshness, with imprecise contours and deep, contrasting colours.
His favourite subjects were hunting scenes, African wildlife and ritual scenes.
Towards the end of his career, in the late 1950s, he switched from fingers to brushes, making his contours sharper and his forms more defined, marking a major stylistic transition in his work.
