Description
Nicolas GASIOROSWKI, Antique medallion. Gouache on paper mounted on canvas. 40 x 30 cm
Born in Paris in 1958, Nicolas Gasioroswki developed an interest in painting at a very early age. Art books, paintings and engravings were a common sight in the homes he frequented. Admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1979 to study in Caron’s studio, he left the school a year later: preferring solitary learning to the strict framework of formal education, he turned definitively towards this path. His studio becomes a theatre of improvisation in which verbal sparring is replaced by coloured chalks; brought to life by hand movements in which splashes of mud and muted blocks of colour dance. The emphasis lies in the motif, the material, the balance, the focal point and the light. A gruelling struggle with the canvas, in which the subject of the painting only emerges once all the elements have come together. An unexpected world, merely hinted at, dances before our eyes: a waterside, a kitten, an abandoned factory, a ruined monument, an absent figure, a character from the East…”
