Description
(Jane Birkin’s copy) Jane BIRKIN ‘Oh! Sorry, you were asleep…’ * Paris, Galatée Films, undated [1990–1991], 1 in-4 volume comprising 87 leaves (front sides only printed), bound in a plastic spiral binding, protected by a transparent Rhodoid cover on the front cover and a red one on the back. Screenplay and dialogue for the TV film ‘Oh! Sorry, you were asleep…’, fully annotated and lavishly illustrated with small sketches by the author. A working copy focused mainly on the female role (all her dialogue is underlined or highlighted in red coloured pencil). The annotations in the text or in the margins are mainly corrections to the dialogue (crossings-out, additions of words or amendments to the text – here always in French – written on the spot). Note the (deliberate) partial or almost complete cutting out of pages 17, 32, 37, 63, 64, 65, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 82, 83 and 86. The entire collection is punctuated by numerous quick sketches in black felt-tip pen, drawn in the margins or even alongside the text (including many portraits and silhouettes, often depicted in context…) on pages 1, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 32, 33, 35, 36, 39, 40, 41, 49, 51, 52, 55, 56, 63, 64, 67, 76, 80, 81, 82, 83 and 85. Note the presence of lips coloured red on page 28 and a heart coloured in the same way on page 41. Finally, the title page is adorned with the address and signature of J. Birkin. Very slight signs of handling; otherwise a beautiful and moving example of the work of this touching and immense artist. *A TV film written and directed by Jane Birkin, released in 1992 and starring Francis Perrin and Christine Boisson. An intimate drama in which a couple spend a night talking, arguing and reflecting on the past, old age, death and, more generally, their memories. The film was subsequently adapted into a play in 1999 and then for Jane Birkin’s latest album in 2020 (which bears the same title), in which she recalls intimate memories, notably the death of her daughter Kate.
