Mario PALMIERI. Untitled, 2006, north of Hokkaidō. Photograph (chromogenic print (silver-based colour print) mounted on Diasec). 120 cm x 95.5 cm.
This work is part of the series ‘Exploration of the Eastern Archipelago’, comprising an edition of 5 prints plus 1 artist’s proof. Here is how the artist describes it:
Work created during my numerous stays in Japan between 2002 and 2009. Over the years, I was able to travel extensively across the archipelago’s four main islands — Honshū, Kyūshū, Shikoku and Hokkaidō. This project was funded by a group of patrons who collect my photographs.
The photographs were taken using a 20x25 large-format view camera,
on colour negative film; short films were also made at the same time
as the photographs, on Super 8 and video.
This work has been exhibited in Paris, Brussels and Breda (Netherlands).
Biography:
Mario Palmieri was born in Calabria, in southern Italy.
He studied drawing at the Maurice-Quentin de la Tour school,
in preparation for entry to the Beaux-Arts in Amiens,
where he passed the entrance examination and graduated from CERIS (Centre
for Studies and Research into Image and Sound), directed
by Henry Coste in Paris, after two years.
Since the late 1990s, he has collaborated with various magazines:
Vogue, Numéro, Harper’s Bazaar, DA, Citizen K, Libération, M le Monde…
For these magazines, he has produced numerous portraits
of figures from the worlds of art, fashion, cinema,
architecture, politics… as well as features
on contemporary architecture, design and
urban landscapes around the world…
He uses a 4x5 view camera and colour negatives to
produce the images for these magazines.
Alongside his work producing images for the press, he developed
a personal body of work focused primarily on the environment
resulting from the presence and activity of Homo sapiens
on the Earth’s surface and the associated consequences.

— Winner of the Henri-Vincenot Foundation Prize, 1993, for a series
of images of vernacular architecture in the Dijon region
— Leonardo da Vinci Prize, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 1994,
for a project on post-war urban planning in Poland,
entitled ‘À la fenêtre’.
— Villa de Noailles in Hyères, commission for a series of photographs
of houses designed by Jean Prouvé in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region
