Japan, Meiji period, early Taisho period A pair of tripod baluster vases with flared necks, mounted on bronze pedestals, decorated with a low-relief design of foaming waves with birds soaring above them in the ‘Kaga zogan’ style. The rim of the neck and the foot are decorated with damascene work in gold, silver and copper, featuring stylised motifs including dragons, taikyokuzu, flames and waves. The handles and base are shaped like chimera heads. Slight deformation of the necks. Bears calligraphic inscriptions on the reverse referring to the artist Yamakawa Kôji (1828–1882). Yamakawa Kôji was a renowned artist specialising in the zogan technique (metal inlay), a traditional art of bronze work involving the inlay of precious metals such as gold and silver. Height: 38.5 cm
