Description
TOMBEAU CHEST OF DRAWERS in rosewood veneer, opening to reveal three rows of five drawers with oak inlays, three of which are in the first row. The front features a design of inlaid scroll motifs within banded borders. The sides are similar. The curved side panels rest on small, arched feet. Chiselled and gilded bronze fittings: lock plates, handles, apron, spouts and feet. Rance marble top moulded with a corbin motif. Stamped: M. CRIARD. Antoine - Mathier CRIARD (1724–1787). Certified as a Master in 1747, and JME, guild hallmark (on the top edge of the front left upright). Paris. Louis XV period. H. 86.5 – W. 134 – D. 66 cm. Usual restoration work. Damage to the decoration. Restored marble. Antoine Mathieu CRIARD was the son of Mathieu Criard. He was admitted as a master in 1747 and opened his own workshop in 1749 on Rue de Charenton, then moved to Rue de Richelieu and Rue Saint Thomas-du-Louvre before settling permanently on Rue du Bac, where he succeeded his colleague Charles Chevallier. He produced high-quality Louis XV-style furniture in rosewood or violetwood veneer, or in thin-sheet veneer, inlaid with floral or foliage motifs, often in bold, contrasting colours. Few pieces in the Transition style are recorded, and none in the Louis XVI style.
