Description
Hemba head, Democratic Republic of Congo, wood, H.19cmxW.12cm (base). This head is the fragment of an effigy of a Hemba ancestor (singiti). The Hemba essentially celebrated the high-ranking male ancestor who, in this society, attested to and legitimised power and possession of the land. These statues were kept in funeral homes or chiefs' houses. Here, the face is distinguished by its finesse and the balance of its features. The head is oval with half-closed eyes, the beard is stylised and the headdress sophisticated in the shape of a cross.
