Description
Lega mask, Democratic Republic of Congo, wood, raffia, H.16cmxW.11cm (base). These masks are used as emblems and symbols of rank by the Bwami society, which governs the social and political life of the Lega. They are not meant to be worn, but to convey philosophical and moral ideas. They were generally handled and displayed during dances or theatrical scenes; through these visual metaphors, the initiate learned the moral code of the society.
