Description
Superb Kota Sango reliquary figure, Gabon, wood, copper,H.29cmxW.9cm (plinth). Linked to the cult of ancestors - lineages or brotherhoods - the Mbumba Bwiti commemorative figurines were placed in the basket containing relics, but also seeds, shells, etc. In 1887, Pierre Savorgan de Brazza published, in "Exploration dans l'Ouest Africain" (Tour du Monde, 1887.II: 328), an engraving showing figures similar to this one, observed on the banks of the Ogooué, in the region of present-day Franceville. Here, the Sango style means that this small reliquary figure can probably be attributed to the Lastourville region. Provenance: Private collection, France, acquired from the Vérité gallery in the 1970s, passed on by descent.
