Description
Important Gope votive board, Kerewa group, Gulf of Papua, Papua New Guinea, wood, pigment H.93cmxW.16cm (base). Gope or titi ebiha, of elongated oblong form, presenting on its face a stylised spirit-being, engraved in champlevé and painted. The oversized head shows a face typical of this region of the Gulf, split in two by a long nose extending over the crescent-shaped forehead, the eyes represented by two black dots. The abdomen, decorated with striations and a disc representing the navel, is flanked by four schematised limbs. Ovoid geometric motifs are engraved on either side of the figure. Patina with traces of white, black and red ochre pigments.
