Bumba-Tsogho Reliquary figure, Gabon, wood, pigment, H.50cmxW.23cm. Among the Tsogho and Sango of southern Gabon, the male initiation society bwete is the centre of social and religious life. The ebandza house of worship was used not only by the bwete but also by other associations such as kono, yamwei and ombudi. This statuette is kept in the ebandza, which symbolises man in the cosmos. Truncated from the abdomen and coloured red, it has been realistically sculpted, with an open mouth, oval eyes, hunched shoulders and arms placed at right angles so that the hands are outstretched.
