Description
Pende mask, Democratic Republic of Congo, wood, pigment, H.50cmxW.16cm. The large Pendé group in the south of the Democratic Republic of Congo is divided into two groups, the Western Pendé on one side and the Eastern Pendé on the other. Both are close to the Angolan border and the Tschokwé group. Their respective styles often overlap. The Western Pendé, from the Kwilu region, are known for their 'Mbuya' type masks, such as this one, with highly stylised faces usually extended by a beard. In the past, these masks were reserved for the rituals that accompanied circumcision ceremonies. Over time, their use became more theatrical. It should also be noted that Mbuya masks serve as models for the ivory pendant masks that are faithful reproductions of them and serve as a reminder that the wearer has courageously undergone the trials of initiation (Cornet, 1971, p.100 to 110, illus. n.58).
