Description
Mende helmet mask, Sierra Leone A headdress topped by a truncated pyramid surrounded by a row of beads; the lower part is decorated with ribbed leaf motifs and the same pyramidal patterns. The back is adorned with various geometric motifs. The figure has a very broad forehead tapering down to a tiny face, with half-closed eyes. These proportions lend the mask a sense of serene calm.
