Description
Toraja funerary head
Wood with traces of polychromy
Indonesia, Sulawesi (Celebes), Toraja people, 19th century
H. 44 cm
Provenance: Galerie Philippe Dodier
This funerary head, known as a ‘Tau Tau’, is carved from wood. The term ‘Tau’ means ‘man’ or ‘statue’; these sculptures were funerary figures representing the deceased. Used by the Toraja people, these images of the deceased are dressed and placed in small cave-like chapels on the hillside. A large notch at the top of the skull would have been used to secure a headdress.
