Description
Buddha Wood with traces of lacquer Burma, Mandalay, 18th–19th centuries or earlier H. 34 cm Provenance: Galerie Philippe Dodier This wooden sculpture depicts a seated Buddha, his hands in the bhûmisparsamudrâ. Traces of thick lacquer are particularly visible on the back. Clad in a monastic robe, the Buddha has almond-shaped, half-closed eyes and elongated earlobes. The surface of the wood shows numerous signs of wear and deterioration, bearing witness to the sculpture’s age. Despite these signs of deterioration, notably the absence of one arm, the sculpture retains a certain inner depth.
