Description
Buddha Head
Stoneware
Thailand, Ayutthaya school, 16th century
H. 44 cm
Provenance: Galerie Philippe Dodier
This beautiful Buddha head is carved from stoneware and displays a slight smile reflecting the inner tranquillity of Buddhist meditation; its eyes are half-closed beneath arched eyebrows. The hair consists of dense curls rising towards a topknot (usnisha). The shoulders show traces of a draped garment with incised folds.
(Chip on the nose, wear, traces of black lacquer)
