Late Eastern Zhou Dynasty
The curved pendant with one end tapering to a sharp point, the other side carved in openwork with an intricate design comprising a stylised, bottle-headed dragon with open jaws and round eyes, the calcified stone a buff colour.

The dragon-shaped curved pendant with its pointed end may have been used as a knot-opener. Many such pieces have been excavated from tombs of the late Eastern Zhou and Western Han dynasty, some more plain and unfinished than others that were elaborately and intricately carved. Xi pendants were usually made as pairs and buried in high-ranking tombs as an example excavated from the mausoleum of the King of Nanyue at Xianggang, Guangzhou, Guangdong province, dated to the Western Han dynasty, illustrates (Fig. 1), see The Complete Collection of Jades unearthed in China, vol. 11. Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hainan, Hongkong, Macao, Taiwan, Beijing, 2005, p. 128. In fact, the present pendant is almost the mirror image to a pendant of the same size, subject matter and buff-coloured stone (Fig. 2), illustrated in C.T. Loo, An Exhibition of Chinese Archaic Jades, West Palm Beach, 1950, LIII.9.
