Description
76. PAIR OF LARGE ENAMELLED PORCELAIN VASES WITH LUOHAN DECORATION Qing dynasty, 18th century A PAIR OF LARGE ENAMELLED 'LUOHAN' VASES Qing Dynasty, 18th century Each with a globular body tapering to a flat base, rising to a tall cylindrical neck with two ribs, each boldly painted around the body with the central figure of Budai casually seated on a straw mat, laughing giddily, surrounded by seven other luohan similarly seated or standing around him, amidst a range of scholarly objects, their faces contorted in pain or pleasure, one figure resting, the neck similarly decorated with two bands of figures and their attendants, with a band of lappets and ruyi-heads encircling the rim and a band of upright lappets above the foot. Each 61 cm (24 in.) high (2). 清 十八世紀 粉彩羅漢圖瓶一對 The decoration around this striking pair of vases is unusual and depicts a group of seven luohan gathered around the central figure of Budai, seated on straw mats and having fun. Their faces finely outlined in iron-red are dramatically rendered with exaggerated features reminiscent of a painting by the Chenghua Emperor (r. 1465-1487) now in the Palace Museum, Beijing. Titled Yituan heqi(A Full Circle of Harmony), it depicts three figures, including the Confucian Tao Yuanming, the Daoist Lu Xiujing and the Buddhist monk Huiyuan in a mutual embrace. A vase sold in Christie's Hong Kong, 28 May 2014, lot 3320, dated to the Yongzheng period of the Qing dynasty, decorated with the single figure of Fuxi, one of the three mythical Chinese emperors, in a compact round composition, similarly depicts the central figure with a face finely rendered in iron-red, his expression joyful and almost mischievous.
