WOODEN NETSUKE REPRESENTING THREE CHESTNUTS With additions by Ichinomiya Nagayoshi, early 19th century A WOOD NETSUKE OF THREE CHESTNUTS With additions by Ichinomiya Nagayoshi, early 19th century Two large chestnuts resting over a flattened nut, naturalistically rendered in well-toned wood; signed on an inlaid silver tablet Ganryushi Ichinomiya Nagayoshi with kao. 4.5 cm (1 3/4 in.) long Provenance: Purchased from Sotheby's London, in 1964 (by repute). Published: Bernard Hurtig, Masterpieces of Netsuke Art: One Thousand Favorites of Leading Collectors, New York, 1973, p. 210, no. 874. 木彫根付 栗 銘「元龍子 一宮長義(花押)」 19世紀前期 Ichinomiya Nagayoshi, a student of Nagatsune, was a well-known maker of sword fittings and it is probable that the signature was added to an existing wood netsuke.
