Description
319. BRONZE RITUAL BELL
Indonesia, Java, 11th century
A BRONZE RITUAL HANDBELL
Indonesia, Java, 11th century
18 cm (7 1/8 in.) high
Cast with a domed body recalling the form of a stupa, surmounted by a vajra-shaped handle topped with a dharmachakra wheel and projecting hook. A lotus petal motif encircles the dome and rim. The original clapper, cast separately, remains attached by wire. Such ghanta were central to Buddhist ritual, and commonly paired with the vajra. This example reflects the flourishing of Buddhism in Java prior to the spread of Islam in the 13th-14th centuries. Handbells of the same period and style are held at the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde, Leiden (RV-1403-1649) and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (30.87.6).
