Description
MUSÉE. HERO AND LEANDER, a poem by Musée. It includes a translation of several of Theocritus’s Idylls by M*** C**. At SESTOS and available in PARIS, from LE BOUCHER, 1774. One volume, in-8 (21 x 14 cm), with a frontispiece, XVI pp., 104 pp., in a full contemporary binding in porphyry calfskin. Smooth, richly decorated and gilt spine bearing the gilt title on a patch of old red morocco, decorated and gilt edges, marbled edges. Slight wear to one lower corner. First edition of the translation by Julien-Jacques Moutonnet de Clairfons. An allegorical frontispiece by Eisen, engraved by Duclos; title page in red and black. This ‘superb frontispiece’ (Cohen) is one of Charles Eisen’s finest works. A very fine copy.
