Description
Studio of Joëlle NEVEU (1944–2007), sculptor Born on 1 January 1944 in Aix-en-Provence, Joëlle Neveu began drawing and developing her artistic flair at a very young age, seeking to break free from a strict social background that showed little appreciation for art. She began her professional career as a designer for a lingerie brand, whilst at the same time enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She began by painting in a figurative style, then discovered sculpture and embarked on a powerful body of work, particularly in marble, practising direct carving to create pieces that are as refined as they are tactile. In 1983, Peter Knapp photographed a black marble sculpture by Joëlle Neveu for Bulgari; this became the centrepiece of an advertising campaign to showcase the brand’s jewellery in the international fashion press, notably *Vogue*. She exhibited as early as 1973 at the Rodin Museum, as part of a group exhibition centred on Collamarini, and subsequently at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1978, in Paris, Tokyo, Boston and Dallas. She passed away in 2007 and was buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
