Note: Whilst Derain is primarily associated with painting, sculpture occupies a distinctive place in his body of work, particularly from the 1930s onwards. *Les Boules* reflects his interest in archaic and folk art: the powerfully modelled frontal face is constructed from basic volumes and spherical motifs, giving it the appearance of a mask.
