Created in 1962, this work belongs to a key period in Martin Barré’s exploration of line and pictorial space. Against a largely unpainted light background, the coloured lines structure the composition and create a tension with the empty space of the canvas.
This period immediately precedes the artist’s use of spray paint from 1963 onwards, which would further his exploration of gesture, line and the fragmentation of space.
