Carteret, Antoine – Fables – Rare autograph dedication by Antoine Carteret on the half-title page. Published by L. Hachette, 1862, first edition. In 12 format, comprising 285 pages, bound in contemporary half-shagreen, with a few scattered pinholes, otherwise in good condition. Antoine Alfred Désiré Carteret (1813–1889) was a Swiss politician and member of the Geneva Radical Party. A French-language man of letters, he was the author of fables and novels. He was elected to the State Council in 1870, serving in the Department of Public Education. He was responsible for the establishment of the University of Geneva and the founding of the faculties of medicine, chemistry and dentistry. He developed primary education and made it free and compulsory in 1874.
