Chack, Paul & Alaux, Gustave – *Sur les bancs de Flandre* – A copy bearing a signed autograph dedication by the author. Illustrated with colour woodcuts by Gustave Alaux. Published by Librairie de la Revue Française, Alexis Redier, undated. ‘Le Paon blanc’ collection, 8vo paperback, in very good condition (except for the damaged cardboard slipcase), printed on Vidalon vellum 1/1090, with a total print run of 1,125. Louis Paul André Chack, born in 1876 and executed by firing squad on 9 January 1945 at Fort de Montrouge in Arcueil, was a French naval officer, writer and collaborator. We can summarise his career and his work through the closing remarks of the government commissioner, acting as prosecutor, during his trial in December 1944: ‘I demand the death penalty for you, Paul Chack; despite your talent, despite your decorations, despite your white hair – indeed, I would go further: I demand it for you precisely because of all that. Because of your talent, your decorations…’
