Chagall, Marc & Solier, Charles – A typewritten letter by Marc Chagall with a handwritten signature, dated 11 February 1970, followed by an 11-page manuscript signed by Charles Solier, ‘Chagall’s Daphnis and Chloe’ ’ – A typewritten letter by Marc Chagall with a handwritten signature, dated 11 February 1970, addressed to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editor of the magazine ‘XXe siècle’ and director of the art gallery of the same name (whose real name was Giuseppe Antonio Leandro Papa, 1904–1974): ‘As I promised you, I shall produce a lithograph for the spring issue of “XXe siècle”. I shall discuss this with Charles Sorlier…’. Charles Sorlier enclosed an 11-page manuscript entitled ‘Daphnis and Chloe’ by Chagall, in a school notebook containing a four-page history of lithography followed by a presentation of Chagall’s work: ‘… With Chagall, everything is different; we are in the presence of the greatest painter, a master craftsman in the history of art. He creates ceramics, sculptures, mosaics, tapestries, stained-glass windows and engravings with equal mastery. Let us make no mistake: Chagall never improvised in any of these fields, and his works are the result of long periods of dedicated work spent in specialist workshops, studying and striving to unlock the secrets of copper, stone, glass, enamel and marble. Chagall did not become a lithographer overnight… He can be proud of the ‘young apprentice’ lithographer he was in his early days, who knew how to apply Michelangelo’s words to himself: ‘Where are you going in this weather and with that white beard? I’m off to school to try and learn something new’…”. Note: Charles Sorlier (1921–1990) was a French engraver. He began his career in Fernand Mourlot’s studio and worked with numerous artists, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Fernand Léger. He became friends with Marc Chagall and worked closely with him, resulting in works of the very highest quality.
