Description
Coppée, François – A signed, handwritten manuscript of 2 pages for the short story ‘Les propos du Père Coin-de-Rue’ ’ – A 2-page manuscript in very fine handwriting, including the author’s corrections and, most likely (in blue), the publisher’s markings. There is a crease and a small tear in the paper, but neither is serious. This is a short story entitled ‘Les propos du Père Coin-de-Rue’; François Coppée’s signature appears at the end of the story. We do not know whether this was ever published (under this title or another), but it is a raw and bitter dialogue between two men, one of whom is Père Coin-de-Rue, following the passing of some young girls returning from a prize-giving ceremony and reflecting on their future. The moral, however, remains intact: ‘Do you know what I’m thinking… – No, go on. – Well, it’s that the first one to throw her flowered hat over the Moulin Rouge may well have won today’s prize for wisdom. ’ The text has been carefully crafted, with numerous crossed-out passages, cross-references and additions. An exceptional play demonstrating the author’s determination to achieve perfection. The author (1842–1908) was one of France’s most popular poets, playwrights and novelists.
