Description
Fouché, Joseph, Duke of Otranto – Autograph signed letter from Fouché sent from the Montmorency Valley – Undated letter (circa 1796) written from the Montmorency Valley, comprising one page and 19 lines. “ I am in the countryside, far from any notaries; I cannot send you my power of attorney straight away, but you may act on my behalf & [...] as regards my intentions, I shall ratify them as soon as I can [...] My wife is very grateful for your kind thoughts; she will reply shortly... ” Note: Joseph Fouché (1759–1820) went into exile on 31 December 1795 to Saint-Leu, to stay with his family, to protect himself from the backlash caused by his repressive actions during the Reign of Terror. He spent the rest of the winter of 1795–1796 in the village where his partner, Bonne Coiquaud, lived. She had given birth to a daughter, Évelina Nièvre, whom he recognised as his own and who died on 23 July 1796, aged 18 months. Fouché married his partner shortly afterwards; she had since changed her first name (to Jeanne) and had given birth to a son, named Joseph Étienne Jean Liberté. Having regained favour in 1796, he gradually rose through the ranks to become Minister of Police in 1799. Joseph Fouché (1759–1820) was a French politician and one of the most controversial figures in French history. He remained Minister of Police throughout the Directoire, the Consulate, the Empire and the Second Restoration.
