The author, 1842–1902 (Alice Marie Céleste Durand, née Fleury), a woman of letters in the mould of George Sand, adopted a man’s name as her pen name: Henry Gréville. A prolific writer, who tried her hand at plays as well as short stories, poetry as well as novels, she was even a successful author. ‘Here, dear Miss, is the little play in question; I have rewritten it from start to finish; not a single line of the original text remains which [...] was not worthy of the actors of the Comédie Française.
