Jannin, Mgr Martial – On my way to my mission (manuscript) From Paris to Qui-Nhon, 26 November 1890 – 2 January 1891 – Copy of the original manuscript, never published, transcribed by his two first cousins (in August 1892). A 116-page manuscript in the format of a school exercise book, in fair condition but complete with the full text. Martial Jannin was an apostolic missionary in Eastern Cochinchina. ‘Sent to live amongst the Bahnars on the Vietnamese Highlands, following in the footsteps and setting an example like the early pioneers, for 50 years. He worked mainly amongst the hill tribes, organising the Kontum Mission to establish it as a new Apostolic Vicariate, of which he became the first bishop. In 1893, ‘with the help of the Blessed Virgin and St Benedict’, he secured the conversion of the village of Kon-Money, which had been struck by smallpox. In 1900, at Kon-Xong-Loh, together with Bishop Bober, he baptised 118 children, and on the bare summit of Kong-Ngah (alt. 1,500 m), he used a large tree which he transformed into an imposing cross, thereby inviting the whole region to place itself under its protection. Bishop Jannin had recognised the need to train young Bahnars to develop and consolidate the missionary work. On 16 July 1940, Bishop Jannin died in the 74th year of his life, and the 50th of his missionary service. He had been an apostle who welcomed everyone, eminently supernatural and renowned for his tender devotion to the Virgin Mary.’ (This text is taken from the archives of the Foreign Missions Society in Paris). Here, in this travel journal, we discover the simplicity and self-sacrifice for God and humanity that would guide his steps throughout his life. These were his words at the age of 25, when he had just left his family and was discovering a new world: ‘Tell everyone that, over there, there is a heart that loves them. Tell them that if Jesus had not called me, I would never have thought of leaving them, but tell them also that, whilst our separation here on earth is brief, we shall be reunited in heaven for ever. Here on earth, thorns; in heaven, roses!...”
