Lamartine, Alphonse de – Autograph manuscript of ‘Graziella’ – In a damaged half-cloth binding, A4 size, undated but appearing to date from the 19th century. An unpaginated manuscript of 124 pages, signed ‘A. de Lamartine’. The handwriting is not that of the author but is either that of his wife or his secretary. It is believed to be the copy he kept for his own use. The provenance is unclear; it comes from a family in Mâcon who wish to remain anonymous. According to word of mouth, this manuscript is said to have come from Abbé Cœur (of whom Lamartine said, ‘A man of substance who will go far’). The handwriting is clear and delicate, with stylistic flourishes; there are no erasures. In it, the author recounts his memories of his youth in Tuscany. First published in *Confidences*, *Graziella* was subsequently issued as a separate volume; in it, he idealises and romanticises an idyll set on Procida. This story was written at the start of his period of financial hardship, yet it is one of the last in which Lamartine’s artistry is fully expressed (prior to his works written purely to earn a living). Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869) needs no introduction. He was a poet, novelist, playwright, historian and politician, elected to the Académie française in 1829. In our collective imagination, he is, above all, the very embodiment of Romanticism.
