Description
Prudhomme, Sully – Stances and Poems (1865–1866) – Copy 14/20 on Chinese paper, from a total print run of 45 on large-format paper (including 25 on Holland paper). Copy featuring a portrait of the author in two different states. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, publisher, 1872, partly original edition, 16mo, 319 pages, in a fine binding signed ‘Yseux Sr de Thierry-Simier’, in half morocco with plum-coloured corners, ribbed spine, gilt head, covers preserved. This copy is enhanced by an autograph letter signed by the first winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901, Sully Prudhomme; the letter bears postage stamps and official seals, and is addressed to Mr Désiré Lemerre (a publisher by profession and son of Alphonse): ‘My dear friend, I would be most grateful if you would kindly let me know in a note whether I shall receive any money before the end of the year…’. A very fine copy. Please note: regarding this partly original edition, further information has been provided to us by a researcher and scholar, Mr T.C. “The first appearance in bookshops of Sully Prudhomme’s collection *Stances et poèmes* dates from 29 April 1865, and it was the publisher Achille Faure (23 Boulevard Saint Martin, Paris) who, at the time, took the risk of publishing (in a small print run, it seems) a young, as yet unknown author, the future Nobel Laureate in Literature. But Achille Faure went bankrupt shortly afterwards, and it was Alphonse Lemerre, at 47 Passage Choiseul, who published the other volumes by the author of *Le Vase brisé*. The 1872 edition was the first to appear under Alphonse Lemerre’s ‘official’ imprint. However, between the 1865 version published by Achille Faure and the 1872 version published by Lemerre, Sully Prudhomme changed the titles of certain poems, rearranged them according to a different order, and even made a few minor, though significant, corrections. In 1872, Lemerre republished the original volume, *Stances et Poèmes*, which contained the famous *Vase brisé*...’
