Description
Scribe, Eugène – Autograph letter, signed and dated 19 June 1855 – A three-page autograph letter signed by Eugène Scribe, addressed to his neighbour (Adrien Dauzats, Orientalist painter, illustrator and lithographer). Concerning a raffle and the drawings to be won. ‘Here, my dear neighbour, is Mr Glaire’s drawing; there have also been, in our gallery since yesterday, four or five drawings promised by Mr Nadar and four commitments for photographs. Despite my best efforts, the takings are hardly rising [...] We will need to set aside a day to select the drawings for the album and also to decide on the arrangements for the draw... ’ Eugène Scribe (1791–1861) was a playwright, composer, writer, librettist and novelist. Elected to the Académie française in 1834, he was one of the most frequently performed playwrights of the 19th century, both in France and throughout the world.
