Description
Scribe, Eugène – Autograph letter, signed and dated Monday morning, 4 June – A three-page autograph letter signed by Eugène Scribe, addressed to his neighbour (Adrien Dauzats, Orientalist painter, illustrator and lithographer). Concerning a raffle and drawings to be won. ‘Here is a lovely drawing by Mr Celestin Nanteuil. I am sending it to you so that you might be so kind as to have it mounted, to ensure it is not damaged… I hope to fulfil the promises made by Mr Dela… and Ingres, so that I may add their names to those of a few other artists who had also made such promises…” Eugène Scribe (1791–1861) was a playwright, composer, writer, librettist and novelist. Elected to the Académie française in 1834, he was one of the most frequently performed playwrights of the 19th century, both in France and around the world.
