Description
Simonin de Maléchard – The Art of Conversation. A poem dedicated to the King. Followed by: Notes or a more detailed explanation of my ideas and principles – Original manuscript dated 1835 (corrected date). Former mayor of Maizières (Doubs), with comments added to the flyleaf by his son. This manuscript comprises 2 pages of preface, 6 pages of the poem, comprising 182 lines, and 12 pages elaborating on his ideas, principles and life (including one additional page of comments by his son). The work is in good condition apart from the loose endpapers. Excerpt: ‘Boileau’s *Art Poétique*, Book I, provided me with the inspiration for the precepts I set out here in my capacity as an author, which I have entitled *The Art of Conversation*. I hope they may serve as a useful guide in the world… I dare to hope that the public will receive them with kindness and without envy, just as I offer them without pretension…”
