Description
Thuriet, Ch. – *Le Prince et la Bergère* (manuscript) – A four-page letter in fine handwriting (pages re-glued but with no text missing), including, on the centre page, the text of a fabliaux which the author presents to his (unidentified) correspondent and on which he offers commentary, mainly on Rabelais’s *Gargantua*, alongside his own text. The text is signed on the final page and dated on the first page as Lormon, 10 April 1890. ‘I only reached the summit of Lomont yesterday evening; the snow was falling as if it were December…’. It should be noted that the title ‘Le Prince et la Bergère’ has a subtitle: ‘A short Franche-Comté eclogue’... ‘An incognito prince, in Franche-Comté, was out walking one day, on foot, for the sake of his health. So that he might, as his whims dictated, better scale the mountains and probe the precipices...’. It should also be noted that Charles-Émilien Thuriet (1832–1920) was a French writer and poet; a magistrate by profession, he was a co-founder of the *Revue littéraire de la Franche-Comté*.
