Tristan BERNARD (1866–1947). Signed autograph poem, [1930]; ¾ page in-4. Untitled sonnet, in which the humourist reflects on his birth in Besançon and his Jewish heritage. This sonnet is dedicated to Charles LE GOFFIC. We quote the first and last stanzas. ‘In Besançon, a city of clockmakers and soldiers, — This century being sixty-four years older I was born… Father, mother, grandparents and great-grandparents, Had seen their ancestral spirit take root there. […] And, though I never grew up there, Le Goffic, beneath your rooftops, I felt I could touch the very depths of your Breton soul With all my Jewish spirit and all my Comtois heart.” Enclosed is a postcard featuring portraits of Tristan Bernard, Emmanuel Arène and Lily Butler.
