Description
Alexandre BESSON (1758–1826), member of the Convention (Doubs). Letter and reply, 1794 and 1804; 4 and 3 pages, in-4. Besançon, 8 Brumaire Year III (29 October 1794), as a representative of the people, to his colleague Pierre-Antoine LALOY. The purpose of his mission was ‘the restoration of order in the Republic’s saltworks and the supervision of any improvements that might be made to them’. He began with those on the Meurthe, then travelled to Langres. In the Jura, he found a ‘state of oppression’ and still had to carry out ‘some purges of the established authorities’ there; furthermore, before the end of his mission, he would be unable to attend to the saltworks for which he had taken certain measures, which he lists… Paris, 10 Germinal Year XII (31 March 1804), as ‘Manager of the Saltworks and owner of the forges at the headwaters of the Loue’, to the members of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers.
