Description
Alfred CORTOT (1877–1962). Handwritten letter, Lausanne, 1 May 1958, to the musicologist Harald Strauss in Strasbourg; 2 pages, in-8 format, on his letterhead, in a stamped envelope.
Concerning ‘the possibility of recording the sessions during which we, the performers and I, endeavour to explore the works presented to our shared enthusiasm as closely as possible to the composer’s intention’. One amateur did indeed record one such session on a tape recorder; but Cortot does not believe that such sessions have ‘any general educational value’. He does, however, envisage the possibility “that, for some future recordings of classical works, the broadcast might be preceded by some analytical commentary, which could be used for the purpose of studying them”...
Enclosed is a letter, Paris, 7 September 1933, expressing thanks for a ‘token of artistic appreciation’ following a radio broadcast (1 p., in-8, typewritten on his letterhead).
