Description
Claude Prost, known as Captain LACUZON (1607–1681), soldier and hero of Franche-Comté’s independence. L.A.S. (?) ‘Claude Prost La Cuzon’, Château de Montaigu, 20 March 1641, addressed to ‘My Lords’; 2 pages, small folio.
A very rare letter.
‘The villages and people living in the vicinity of Montaigu, where I have the honour of commanding (though it is but a veritable wilderness) under His Majesty’s authority, are lodging their complaints with the Court, as they have already done with His Excellency, regarding the disorder and unbearable excesses of the mountain soldiers, but above all those from the Château de La Chaux, and others from those parts—thefts, injuries […] the hijacking of local convoys, the rape of women and girls, extortion and other similar excesses and abuses’… The peasants can no longer work, and they are constantly forced to call upon the La Cuzon company for help: ‘but the situation is such that I cannot remedy it without resorting to violence, and for that reason it is necessary to seek assistance from a higher authority’…
Two further letters ‘from La Cuson’ are enclosed: - Montaigu, 2 November 1641 (1 p., small folio, with water stains and missing sections), in which he offers assistance to the archer La Montagne for the protection of convoys; - Saint-Laurent, 22 January 1646 (2 pp., small folio), lodging a complaint against Sieur du Boulay, commander of the French garrison at Courlaon, who has on several occasions unlawfully arrested one of his soldiers, and whose ‘boastful outbursts’ are causing unrest throughout the neighbourhood… Plus 9 drafts or rough copies of letters to Captain Lacuzon, 1643–1668 (some defects).
