Description
Hudson LOWE (1769–1844), English general, Napoleon’s jailer on St Helena. Letter from the author, Baden (Hungary), 11 January 1826, to Count BALMAIN in Paris; three and a half pages, quarto size, address bearing a red wax seal (broken); in English. He has learnt that his wife, Lady Lowe, did not receive the parcel he had sent her via Baron Sturmer; it contained a letter for Balmain, which he unfortunately did not receive. Lowe therefore reiterates here his condolences on the irreparable loss [Tsar ALEXANDER I, who died on 19 November 1825] which every honest person in Europe must feel. He knows that Balmain will continue to hold Emperor Alexander in high esteem, as will all those who had earned his regard, and he hopes that the protection and favours he had received from him will continue… Finally, he mentions his wife, Lady Lowe, whom he has advised against settling in Paris, preferring instead Ems, Baden on the Rhine, Brussels, or even England; as for Baden, he has recommended her to Count Bornstedt, but Balmain must know of Russian families living in that region…
