Description
Françoise d’Aubigné, Marquise de MAINTENON (1635–1719). Autograph letter (initialled), [1701]; 1 page, quarto (left-hand corner slightly torn, with a few letters missing).
Rules for the conduct of her correspondent at Saint-Cyr.
‘Your good will, your talents and your zeal will be of no use [if] you do not exercise restraint. It will be impossible to live with you. Gradually remedy the abuses of the classes; do not blame the past; speak less and consider carefully what is happening in order to correct it gently. Do not consult me so often, nor hope to reform your class in a short space of time. But above all, ask God for peace and silence; treat your sisters with consideration, not so much out of indulgence as out of a desire not to upset them.”
Formerly in the Marcel Plantevignes collection.
