Concerning a journey that François ARAGO wishes to undertake to Syria and Egypt. Arago would like to know the estimated costs involved (transport, food, accommodation, guides, interpreters): ‘he needs this information in order to present to the Academy of Sciences and to the Minister of Public Instruction an estimate of the funds that would need to be allocated for the journey’. He has consulted travel books, which ‘set out very well everything concerning the poetic aspect of the matter, but none deigns to go into the prosaic details of the expense’. He prefers to obtain this information ‘first-hand from those who know both sides of the matter’. He is also going to see DAUZATS [the painter had accompanied Baron Taylor on his mission to Egypt in 1830].
